You could be forgiven for feeling an Orwellian chill in the air in light of the publication of the white paper this week. Until a few days ago

For many months the health community has speculated about the shape and scope of Andrew Lansley’s plans for the NHS. This week, Mr Lansley went some way toward answering many of the questions that have buzzed around his health policy. “Liberating the NHS” is a wide-ranging White Paper that sets out a radical vision for NHS reform. There are answers about the direction of travel for health policy in the months and years ahead, but many questions remain over important details.
commented: ‘Today’s White Paper represents one of the biggest shake ups of the health system since the NHS was established. The ambitions it sets out for a more patient-focused, clinically-led NHS are the right ones. The lesson of the last decade though is that the impact of the reforms will depend critically on how effectively they are implemented.
